Although the main emphasis of this program is training students in the practical skills necessary for ministry, The Awakening also provides an environment rich with opportunities for spiritual equipping. “I didn’t realize how much of an impact the ‘pre-trip’ festivities would have on me. I believe it really set the tone for the summer,” said Libby, an intern from Georgia who had previously participated in a mission trip to Costa Rica with The Awakening. In order to prepare their minds for the work before them, the interns read Irresistible Revolution prior to arriving in Oklahoma City. They also spent time with executives and participated in prayer with Dr. Lou and Rebecca Shirey before setting out. By radically shifting their minds toward a focus on missions, they were sure to never see the gospel or the
mission field the same again.“The Awakening is much more than just another missions organization; it’s a family,” said Julia, an intern from California. She has been involved in the local church her whole life, and wanting a global perspective of ministry, it was a no-brainer to sign up for this opportunity.
The IPHC introduced The Awakening, founded by Max and Jessica Barroso, at the 2009 General Conference. Through this ministry, the Barroso's help students find their identity in Christ and equip youth and college students to take the gospel to every nation. The Awakening schedule never seems to slow down, but the team always finds time to meet with new people and grow daily in their relationships with Christ. They are not in this for cookie-cutter discipleship, but to help young people build a life-long relationship with Christ.
