Madeline Lafferty Preaches at Mississippi Conference Teen Camp

Thursday, May 29, 2014

The Awakening's very own, Madeline Lafferty was invited to speak at the Mississippi Conference teen camp during the last week of May. Other members of The Awakening team accompanied Maddie to Mississippi and served the camp in several different capacities.

Hailing from the Mississippi conference, Maddie was honored to share the Gospel with students who were sitting where she sat not so very long ago.

We are proud of Maddie and the entire Awakening Team that also participated in the Mississippi Conference camp!

The Awakening hosts Heartland Youth Pastor Breakfast

Monday, May 19, 2014

On May 17th, The Awakening had the privilege to host a breakfast for the youth pastors and leaders from the Heartland conference. Teaming up with the heartland conference youth pastor, Woody Burpo,  The Awakening was able to provide a morning full of fellowship and ministry.

Youth Pastors Stephen Jones (NC) and Adrian Mostella (AL) were guest speakers at the breakfast. They spoke to the guests about dealing with struggles in ministry, how to stay healthy while ministering and the importance of a larger community. They emphasized that youth pastors can not succeed as one-man (or woman!) teams and that they desperately need fellowship.

We loved being able to interact with the Heartland youth pastors and give back to them in a small way.

The Awakening visits The Element in OKC

Monday, September 30, 2013

By Dreama Bryant

On September 18, The Awakening had the awesome privilege of ministering at The Element's Wednesday night youth service!  With September being named 'missions month' Youth Pastor Woody Burpo has  been speaking on different ways to spread the love of Christ. The Awakening band lead praise and worship and we had a great time in the presence of the Lord! Max preached a message entitled "A Walk to Remember" and challenged everyone to get to know God personally and then share Him with the world! The altar time was very powerful as many who wanted to be used by God came to the front for prayer! We had such a great time hanging out with The Element and encouraging them in missions!

Forum: Millennials and the Church

Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Many of us have retweeted, posted, or pinned the articles below over the last couple of weeks. Perhaps it's time to dig a little deeper and find out how God can use conversations like these to spark something among our movement. Let's share our thoughts and ideas with one another as we pray and believe that God will equip the IPHC to truly become a place of hope to all generations... Millennials included.

The first article by Evans of CNN was published July 27th and the following 3 are responses from various media outlets.

Why millenials are leaving the church by Rachel Held Evans (CNN Belief Blog)
How to keep millenials in the church by Brett McCracken (The Washington Post)
The church failed millenials, just not in...  by Derek Rishmawy (Churchleaders.com)
The millennial exodus and consumer church by Nate Pyle (Pastor of Christ Community Church)

We invite you to join the conversation. Feel free to share your ideas, insight, or concerns regarding this vital issue. Invite others to chime in as well. Let's develop a think tank that can help our church move forward and engage one another in meaningful conversation!

TA Summer Internship in the words of Bishop Tal

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Written by Bishop J. Talmadge Gardner

One of the stated prayer requests and goals of WMM's The Awakening was the development of an internship program that would provide students with training, experience, and ministry opportunities needed to help them pursue God’s call on their lives. On June 1st, Max and Jessica Barroso, Directors of The Awakening, saw this vision come to fruition as eight interns arrived in Oklahoma City (OKC) ready to begin their summer quest. Let me briefly introduce them to you:
Libby Synan, Peniel PHC (LifePointe Ministries [formerly known as Georgia Conference])
Nick Gullion, Jubilee Christian Center (PacWest Conference)
Julia Holmes, Church of Living Water (PacWest Conference)
Olivia Barefoot, Trinity Worship Center (Cornerstone Conference)
Courtney Haire, Steadman PHC (North Carolina Conference)
Ivan Huereca, El Shadai (Pacific Conference, IPHC Mexico)
Mara East, Emmanuel College
Jaclyn Klerk, Emmanuel College
What a privilege it has been for Stephanie, Gabriella, Addison, Lorena, and I to interact with these valued young leaders. They are half way through the internship program as we speak. Some of the ministry elements that they will be exposed to and participate in include: Ministry training and Spiritual formation track in OKC; Specialized classes in Leadership, Missions, Youth Ministry, and Discipleship; ‘Hang out sessions’ with the Executives and selected Directors of ministry; Ministry Trips to Belgium and the Netherlands; Teams to Panama [my daughter, Gabriella, was on this trip – her first missions’ trip] and Guatemala; Youth Camps and Youth Rallies; Ministry in Local Churches; Church Growth and Development workshops; Youth Quest and General Conference; The Awakening's day to day activities; And multiple service and ministry projects.
In October of 1991, a prophetic challenge was given by John Dawson, author of ‘Taking Our Cities For God’, to the IPHC. The fourth characteristic of this challenge is as follows: “You are to be a tribe that raises up leadership for a vision as big as the world. You are to expose those being trained to the great diversity of ministries and movements. You are to know the Church. This movement is not primarily a nursery. Our success is always to be seen in terms of what is happening in the Kingdom, not in the isolation of our circumstances.”
The internship program comes to a close August 1st. Keep these young leaders in your prayers. They represent so much potential for the Kingdoms’ sake. Four of the eight have already indicated a call to full-time service as Career Missionaries. The Lord of the Harvest is answering our prayers. May they be empowered as they pursue their God-given destiny!
Thank you Max, Jessica, and your team: Geordan, Madeline, Seth, Garrett, and Dreama for your mentorship, passion, and investment in these treasured, young gifts.

Madeline's perspective - SEND @ SCU 2012

Monday, October 1, 2012

By Madeline Lafferty

Last month the Awakening team stepped onto Southwestern Christian University’s campus with the mission to minister to the student body and emphasize the importance of Jesus’ words recorded in Matthew 28:19 where He said, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations.” The week started off on Tuesday morning during chapel with worship led by the Awakening followed with a powerful message by guest speaker and missionary, Joshua Ben King demonstrated the word and spread the gospel message while sculpting a clay pot. It was so amazing to see our lives from the perspective of the potter’s hands. Only the Potter (our Creator, God Almighty)knows the plans he has for the clay. We, the students, were encouraged to remain in His hands as he works to make us usable and complete.

Wednesday night’s service was a more intimate setting with fewer students. Matt Bennett, director of People to People Ministries, brought to our attention what Jesus meant by telling us to be a good “neighbor”. The service was great but what made the night so special for me was the conversations that occurred afterwards. While talking to a couple of my friends, freshmen here at SCU, I was very inspired because I could hear the passion in their voices as they talked about wanting to make a difference in the world- here and abroad.

Thursday morning’s worship set ended on the sweet sound of students singing, “I Surrender All” which are words so pleasing to God. The Awakening’s director, Max Barroso spoke from the passage in John 20 and his message concluded with the point that we are to be like Jesus-willing to sacrifice our lives for the sake of others. SEND (See Every Nation Discipled) Week has been a tradition here at Southwestern for many years and many of the events that take place during this special week have made huge impacts in the lives of many of Southwestern’s students-including my own. It was during a SEND week here at SCU that I surrendered ALL of my desires and dreams to him for the sake of seeing lost people come to know Christ. I am so thankful that this tradition has been continued and I hope that it carries on for many years to come!
