The Awakening says "farewell" to the 2014 summer interns

Monday, August 11, 2014

On August 5th, 2014 The Awakening held the commissioning service for their 2014 summer interns. We took the time to celebrate their hardwork and growth over the summer.

A few of the summer interns gave a short testimony of their time serving with The Awakening. The staff members of The Awakening expressed their appreciation and love to each intern with a few words of encouragement. Bishop Doug Beacham gave a few heartfelt remarks and Bishop Tal Gardner presented each intern with a personalized Bible. Bishop Tommy McGhee gave closing remarks and the benediction which was followed by a prayer time for each individual student.

It was a bittersweet moment end to the two month internship. While they were serving with The Awakening, the interns ministered in many places including Oklahoma, North Carolina, Florida, Haiti, Costa Rica, Panama and Hungary. The students all departed on Wednesday, August 6, 2014.

On behalf of all The Awakening Staff, we want to say thank you to the summer interns for all their hard work and dedication to The Lord’s work. You will always hold a special place in our hearts and we love you very much. Now go change the world!

Project Restore: A Place of Hope

Friday, August 8, 2014

by Kaylee Gernandt
summer intern to The Awakening

Last week, while a majority of The Awakening team was in Hungary for EuroQuest, I was given the opportunity to travel to the east coast to stay in a safe home for human trafficking survivors. This home is a part of Project Restore which is, “a non-profit ministry existing to provide a safe and healthy home environment where hope and Christ-centered love collide to offer complete healing and restoration of survivors of human trafficking.” It was my pleasure to get to see first-hand how this safe home was run. I was nervous going in because I wondered what the girls staying there would think of me intruding on their lives, but I could not have been more mistaken. The girls welcomed me with smiles and hugs and I quickly realized that they were as excited to have me as I was to be there.
Much of the schedule for each week is planned in advance so that the girls will get to participate in different activities. Some of the things that I participated in were Equine Therapy, Grief Share group, classroom time, and even free time when we were given the option to choose a fun activity to do as a group. Equine therapy was definitely a new experience for me because we didn’t ride the horses but instead fed them, groomed them, and learned how some of their training is done. All of the horses at this stable had been rescued and it was easy to tell that the girls had already made deep connections with certain horses.

Grief Share was a group for those who had lost one or multiple loved ones whether to death or other circumstances and this group consisted of people from the community. For classroom time, the girls were currently working through a DVD series by John Bevere called “The Bait of Satan” which discussed ways to keep from taking offense and trying to avenge ourselves when we have been wronged. I liked that there was a variety of activities and options that the residents could choose from in addition to what was required of everyone.
My favorite part of the week was when the girls and I had a sleepover in the living room and watched movies and ate popcorn. The whole week was truly a blessing by getting to watch these strong women seek after and worship Jesus. It is so encouraging to see their ability to talk about their past with the assurance that it will not dictate their future. I am excited to see the fruit of Project Restore and I cannot wait to see what the residents are able to do to assist others who have survived human trafficking.

How Great is Our God!

Thursday, August 7, 2014

by Evan Davis
summer intern to The Awakening
How great is our God? This is the question I found myself asking on the last morning service of Euroquest. How great is the God who brought eight nations together under one roof to praise his name? As I stood in awe while each nation sang that song in their own tongue I was reminded of 1 Corinthians 12:4-7. "There are a varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are a varieties of service, but the same Lord: and there are a varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." In this moment I realized what it really means to be a part of an international body of believers.

The theme of Euroquest 2014 was "Rebuilding the Altar in Europe". In Joshua when God commands the people to build an altar he specifies that they must use only uncut stone. How much easier would it have been to build an altar with uniform stones that fit together perfectly? Building with fresh stone is painstaking because each rock has a distinct shape. Similarly the church body is comprised of individuals who are all different. Do you ever find yourself thinking how much easier it would be to "do" church if a few members were a little less "different"?

Building with uniform stones may be easier but how much more beautiful is an altar of uncut stone? The delicate balance of these distinct stones fitting together is what makes it beautiful. Being the body can be difficult because it's comprised of broken people, but just like an altar of uncut stone a church body of broken people brings glory to God. There are a variety of people in the body, but we all serve the same God. That is what is so beautiful about both the altar in Joshua and the church today.

Thank God for giving me this realization and allowing me to meet people from our church in Europe!

Youth Quest 2014

Monday, July 14, 2014

If you weren't able to make it to Daytona Beach, Florida this summer for Youth Quest 2014, then you missed out on some great moments!

The Awakening team was present in full force this year. We sent 7 summer interns as well as 3 of our traditional interns and 5 staff members. The Awakening booth featured new t-shirts, The Awakening Band's new EP, and information about our new leader's initiative; Native Leader.

One of the highlights for us this year was our involvement in Youth Quest FORUMS. What are they? They are new classes that Youth Quest has created to allow students and leaders to learn more about different areas of ministry and life.

Several of our team members had the honor to be involved in the FORUMS experience. Seth Nix spoke on the panel about Worship. Skye Liles presented about social media and technology. Dreama Bryant, Maddie Lafferty and Jonathan Liles talked to students about missions and what steps they could begin taking NOW to get to the missions field later in life.

It was a privilege to be part of YQ 2014. We know that it had a lasting impact on all the students, leaders, and parents that attended and we are grateful to have witnessed it all.

Madeline Lafferty Preaches at Mississippi Conference Teen Camp

Thursday, May 29, 2014

The Awakening's very own, Madeline Lafferty was invited to speak at the Mississippi Conference teen camp during the last week of May. Other members of The Awakening team accompanied Maddie to Mississippi and served the camp in several different capacities.

Hailing from the Mississippi conference, Maddie was honored to share the Gospel with students who were sitting where she sat not so very long ago.

We are proud of Maddie and the entire Awakening Team that also participated in the Mississippi Conference camp!

Max shares at MyChurch

Monday, May 26, 2014

On May 25th, Max had the opportunity to share about The Awakening at My Church in Mustang, OK. Pastor Steve Cowan has been preaching a series on missions called "Mission 3:16" and it was our privilege to be a part. Over the last couple of years, we have worked closely with Nexus Youth and Youth Pastor Keisha Gordon. On top of visiting their congregation, last year we took their youth group on a missions trip to Nashville, TN.

We are super excited to see what God is doing and through this church and we are looking forward to our next opportunity to serve them!

Global Leadership Summit 2014

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

The World Missions Ministries Division of the IPHC held its first Global Leadership Summit this month. Beginning on May 13th and concluding on May 20th, the GLS hosted global leaders from 41 nations.

The Awakening Team was blessed to be involved in the GLS. We were able to spend quality one-on-one time with many leaders, eat meals with them, interact during prayer time and much more.

We fully believe that this Summit was a huge blessing to all the leaders who attended. It allowed them to connect with other leaders whom they may never have met before, share ideas about ministry and create lasting friendships.

A big thank you goes to Bishop Talmadge Gardner and the World Missions Team for hosting such a meaningful event and for allowing us to be a part of it.

The Awakening hosts Heartland Youth Pastor Breakfast

Monday, May 19, 2014

On May 17th, The Awakening had the privilege to host a breakfast for the youth pastors and leaders from the Heartland conference. Teaming up with the heartland conference youth pastor, Woody Burpo,  The Awakening was able to provide a morning full of fellowship and ministry.

Youth Pastors Stephen Jones (NC) and Adrian Mostella (AL) were guest speakers at the breakfast. They spoke to the guests about dealing with struggles in ministry, how to stay healthy while ministering and the importance of a larger community. They emphasized that youth pastors can not succeed as one-man (or woman!) teams and that they desperately need fellowship.

We loved being able to interact with the Heartland youth pastors and give back to them in a small way.

SEND Conference @ Southwestern Christian University

Thursday, October 3, 2013

On September 10-12th, WMM's Youth and College department (The Awakening) hosted the 8th annual edition of SEND conference on the campus of Southwestern Christian University. The students had the opportunity to hear the challenge to respond to the great commission from missionary Darah Tickle and The Awakening's Director Max Barroso. The Awakening Band led worship.

We are thankful for the great response and level of engagement from the students. SCU's VP for Student Development, Brad Davis, already contacted our office interested in having SEND on campus every semester! We are thankful for the doors God is opening on our college campuses, and we look forward to continue opening doors for young adults as they fulfill their God-given destiny!

The Awakening visits The Element in OKC

Monday, September 30, 2013

By Dreama Bryant

On September 18, The Awakening had the awesome privilege of ministering at The Element's Wednesday night youth service!  With September being named 'missions month' Youth Pastor Woody Burpo has  been speaking on different ways to spread the love of Christ. The Awakening band lead praise and worship and we had a great time in the presence of the Lord! Max preached a message entitled "A Walk to Remember" and challenged everyone to get to know God personally and then share Him with the world! The altar time was very powerful as many who wanted to be used by God came to the front for prayer! We had such a great time hanging out with The Element and encouraging them in missions!

Forum: Millennials and the Church

Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Many of us have retweeted, posted, or pinned the articles below over the last couple of weeks. Perhaps it's time to dig a little deeper and find out how God can use conversations like these to spark something among our movement. Let's share our thoughts and ideas with one another as we pray and believe that God will equip the IPHC to truly become a place of hope to all generations... Millennials included.

The first article by Evans of CNN was published July 27th and the following 3 are responses from various media outlets.

Why millenials are leaving the church by Rachel Held Evans (CNN Belief Blog)
How to keep millenials in the church by Brett McCracken (The Washington Post)
The church failed millenials, just not in...  by Derek Rishmawy (Churchleaders.com)
The millennial exodus and consumer church by Nate Pyle (Pastor of Christ Community Church)

We invite you to join the conversation. Feel free to share your ideas, insight, or concerns regarding this vital issue. Invite others to chime in as well. Let's develop a think tank that can help our church move forward and engage one another in meaningful conversation!

TA Summer Internship in the words of Bishop Tal

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Written by Bishop J. Talmadge Gardner

One of the stated prayer requests and goals of WMM's The Awakening was the development of an internship program that would provide students with training, experience, and ministry opportunities needed to help them pursue God’s call on their lives. On June 1st, Max and Jessica Barroso, Directors of The Awakening, saw this vision come to fruition as eight interns arrived in Oklahoma City (OKC) ready to begin their summer quest. Let me briefly introduce them to you:
Libby Synan, Peniel PHC (LifePointe Ministries [formerly known as Georgia Conference])
Nick Gullion, Jubilee Christian Center (PacWest Conference)
Julia Holmes, Church of Living Water (PacWest Conference)
Olivia Barefoot, Trinity Worship Center (Cornerstone Conference)
Courtney Haire, Steadman PHC (North Carolina Conference)
Ivan Huereca, El Shadai (Pacific Conference, IPHC Mexico)
Mara East, Emmanuel College
Jaclyn Klerk, Emmanuel College
What a privilege it has been for Stephanie, Gabriella, Addison, Lorena, and I to interact with these valued young leaders. They are half way through the internship program as we speak. Some of the ministry elements that they will be exposed to and participate in include: Ministry training and Spiritual formation track in OKC; Specialized classes in Leadership, Missions, Youth Ministry, and Discipleship; ‘Hang out sessions’ with the Executives and selected Directors of ministry; Ministry Trips to Belgium and the Netherlands; Teams to Panama [my daughter, Gabriella, was on this trip – her first missions’ trip] and Guatemala; Youth Camps and Youth Rallies; Ministry in Local Churches; Church Growth and Development workshops; Youth Quest and General Conference; The Awakening's day to day activities; And multiple service and ministry projects.
In October of 1991, a prophetic challenge was given by John Dawson, author of ‘Taking Our Cities For God’, to the IPHC. The fourth characteristic of this challenge is as follows: “You are to be a tribe that raises up leadership for a vision as big as the world. You are to expose those being trained to the great diversity of ministries and movements. You are to know the Church. This movement is not primarily a nursery. Our success is always to be seen in terms of what is happening in the Kingdom, not in the isolation of our circumstances.”
The internship program comes to a close August 1st. Keep these young leaders in your prayers. They represent so much potential for the Kingdoms’ sake. Four of the eight have already indicated a call to full-time service as Career Missionaries. The Lord of the Harvest is answering our prayers. May they be empowered as they pursue their God-given destiny!
Thank you Max, Jessica, and your team: Geordan, Madeline, Seth, Garrett, and Dreama for your mentorship, passion, and investment in these treasured, young gifts.

Reflections from the Director

In this, my second communique to you as the Executive Director of World Missions Ministries, I wanted to pay special tribute to Ronald W Carpenter, Sr., who went to be with the Lord on September 20. I have found myself reminiscing the life and ministry of Bishop Carpenter. I remember like it was yesterday when he met with the Executive Committee for lunch at one of his favorite restaurants, Charleston’s, to tell us that he had decided to resign as General Superintendent of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. Doug, Chris, and I sat there sorrowful and tearful as he shared his heart. I remember him telling us that his number one priority was to get Mrs. Nan home to South Carolina where she could be surrounded by their loving family and many friends. God graciously honored his request.
Bishop Carpenter’s resignation was unprecedented and courageous and was made for all of the right reasons. I honor him for valuing his church and his family above self. His selfless decision demonstrates a remarkable sense of personal character and integrity. His sense of purpose and leadership guided the Council of Bishops through the most comprehensive reorganization of our church in this era. The politics of the decision could not dissuade him from doing what was right.
As the youngest member of the Executive Committee and on a very personal note, Ron was a spiritual covering and father when I needed a covering or father. He was a mentor when I needed a mentor, and he was a friend when I needed a friend. I am honored to have been able to have served under his command.
I close by sharing the obituary for Bishop Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr.:
Dr. Ronald Wayne Carpenter, Sr. went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 20, 2012. Born May 16, 1948 to Joseph David and Pauline Carpenter. Surviving loved ones are his faithful wife, Nan Hale Carpenter, of 46 years. His son and daughter-in-law, Ron Carpenter Jr. and Hope Hilley Carpenter. His daughter and son-in-law, Jewel Carpenter Wilson and Bill Wilson. Mother, Pauline Bissett. Sister, Sheila Risley. Five grandchildren, Austin and Avery Wilson, Chase, Chaz and Chanlin Carpenter and one great grandson, Zayden Carpenter. Ronnie answered the call to preach at 16 years old and has served the Lord by serving the International Pentecostal Holiness Church for 48 years in various forms of leadership from Pastor, College Professor, Upper South Carolina Conference Superintendent, Evangelism USA Director and lastly, presiding Bishop of the IPHC at the 26th General Conference. He will always be remembered for his humble spirit and giving nature. He was a strong leader yet a gentle man. He was small in stature but a giant in the spirit. He will truly be missed by all that knew and loved him.
Respectfully yours,
***

Converge 2012

A large part of our ministry is focused on training and empowering others to be all that God has called them to be. For years we've had a vision of hosting a week-long discipleship event. And recently, that vision came to fruition when we held our first ever "Converge."
Our focus was on discipling upper high school and college aged young people around Europe. The attendees participated in daily devotions, ministry training, street outreach, and local church ministry. The event was much bigger than expected! These young people led others to Christ, in addition to experiencing personal revival. Attendees came from London, Wales, Antwerp, and Brussels.
I want to give special thanks to our leadership team from Belgium: Gretchen Schwartz, Maldo Amadar, Betsy Salazar, Mark Roskam, and from the UK: Rob Crigger and Jasmine Crilly. Also, a big thank you to those who gave a special financial gift making this event a huge success!

The Awakening Brings SEND to SCU in Oklahoma City

Some of the Faith Elementary School students with the building supplies for the well
I can still remember being a student at Southwestern Christian University (SCU) in 2006, and hearing missionary Jeff Willhoite speak about persecution in Indochina. He tore up a page of his Chinese Bible and gave it to me. That was my first SEND experience, and that page has never left my own Bible.
I believe in the deep, profound impact of SEND week because I know the impact it has made on my life and ministry. The exposure to different missionaries and their stories, hearing about the opportunities available for students to get plugged in, and realizing that you can make a difference are priceless!
Recently, we held our annual SEND conference on the campus of SCU. Joshua Ben King, Matt Bennett, and I were the main speakers and The Awakening Band led praise and worship. It was amazing to see how God knit together the overall theme of the messages shared from the pulpit.

Joshua Ben King preaching at SCU

SCU Students actively listening during a SEND sermon
Joshua Ben kicked off SEND week using his pottery wheel to demonstrate how God, the Potter, can take us, mold us, heal our brokenness, and reshape our lives. He shared in a powerful way that God has a plan and destiny for our lives. SEND continued the next evening with Matt Bennett posing the question, “Who is your neighbor?” Matt said once we allowed God to reshape our lives, we begin to see people as He does. Then we can then truly love our neighbor. For the closing service, I preached about the example of Christ as the Sent one and the pattern He laid for our lives. God wants to send us as He was sent: as a Son, Servant, Seed, and Sacrifice. Once we allow Him to mold us and shape our perspective, we can truly become the seed willing to go into the ground and die to bear fruit.
We are thankful that SEND was a big success! We had the opportunity to connect with many students interested in missions and we promoted our annual Spring Break mission trip we take with SCU students! God is doing great things and constantly calling workers to the harvest. We are glad to know that the student body at SCU is hearing and responding to that call!

Madeline's perspective - SEND @ SCU 2012

Monday, October 1, 2012

By Madeline Lafferty

Last month the Awakening team stepped onto Southwestern Christian University’s campus with the mission to minister to the student body and emphasize the importance of Jesus’ words recorded in Matthew 28:19 where He said, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations.” The week started off on Tuesday morning during chapel with worship led by the Awakening followed with a powerful message by guest speaker and missionary, Joshua Ben King demonstrated the word and spread the gospel message while sculpting a clay pot. It was so amazing to see our lives from the perspective of the potter’s hands. Only the Potter (our Creator, God Almighty)knows the plans he has for the clay. We, the students, were encouraged to remain in His hands as he works to make us usable and complete.

Wednesday night’s service was a more intimate setting with fewer students. Matt Bennett, director of People to People Ministries, brought to our attention what Jesus meant by telling us to be a good “neighbor”. The service was great but what made the night so special for me was the conversations that occurred afterwards. While talking to a couple of my friends, freshmen here at SCU, I was very inspired because I could hear the passion in their voices as they talked about wanting to make a difference in the world- here and abroad.

Thursday morning’s worship set ended on the sweet sound of students singing, “I Surrender All” which are words so pleasing to God. The Awakening’s director, Max Barroso spoke from the passage in John 20 and his message concluded with the point that we are to be like Jesus-willing to sacrifice our lives for the sake of others. SEND (See Every Nation Discipled) Week has been a tradition here at Southwestern for many years and many of the events that take place during this special week have made huge impacts in the lives of many of Southwestern’s students-including my own. It was during a SEND week here at SCU that I surrendered ALL of my desires and dreams to him for the sake of seeing lost people come to know Christ. I am so thankful that this tradition has been continued and I hope that it carries on for many years to come!
