Jon’s Perspective: The Bigger Picture

Friday, November 5, 2010

A while back, I had taken a trip to my hometown to visit my family and friends. I had a wonderful time seeing how they had grown, and learning the directions their lives were taking them. I always receive a joy in my heart when I am around them, reminiscing about times gone by. However, like all good things, it had to come to an end, and I prepared myself for the return trip home.

My flight back to Oklahoma City left Roanoke, VA airport at 6 a.m., and it was a two hour drive to the airport. That was a very early morning to say the least.
When I arrived at the airport, I checked my bags and proceeded through strict airport security. I then began to board the plane, taking my usual window seat. It was still very dark outside and I couldn’t see anything past the window. While gazing at the window, I noticed it was very dirty and unpleasant to look at. I wanted to take a nap, but I couldn’t bring myself to lay my head against it. So, I sat there uncomfortable and disappointed with the condition of my surroundings. It wasn’t until the sun rose over the horizon that my heart was changed. When I looked at the window, I no longer saw the dirt or smudges that covered the glass, but rather I saw a bigger picture. There were beautiful trees and valleys, and the fog was nestled in them, covering them like a blanket. It was so beautiful that I had to thank God for all He had placed before me.

This experience made me ponder how many times God places windows in our lives to see through to the bigger picture, yet we are too busy looking at the window itself to notice.
We go through everyday routines complaining about how nothing seems to go right, and we do not want to reach out because life can be unappealing. However, just beyond our surroundings is a world so beautiful, full of beautiful people that God created. He is longing for us to notice, to experience it by becoming involved. It is time for us, as God’s children, to expand our vision from what is in front of us (the window) and reach out to the world! Mark 16:15 commands us to go into the world and preach the gospel to all creation. It is not a simple request, but a commission. It is our duty to share all the beautiful things God has given us with those who are not as fortunate. I know you may be thinking, “what can I do? I cannot save anyone.” The good news is that you don’t have to. Mark 16:16 states, “if they believe and are baptized, they will be saved.” God will take care of that, but how can they believe if they do not hear? I challenge you to be God’s voice, be His hands outstretched. Give it a try and just see what can happen! I bet you will be amazed just like I was.
