This past week, The Awakening had the chance to hang out with the awesome students at Holmes Bible College in Greenville, SC for SEND Week 2010! SEND is the annual missions conference hosted by WMM on the campuses of our IPHC colleges to bring awareness about what WMM is up to around the world.
The first day of SEND opened with a session led by Phillip Gschwend, a SOWer serving in Haiti. Philip has been an incredible blessing to the IPHC’s ministry in Haiti where he is using his skills as a plumber, electrician, and builder to assist with disaster relief and team projects in a country devastated by the January 12th earthquake.
The second SEND session was led by Cutty Peacock, an IPHC youth pastor in Goldsboro, NC who has years of missions experience under his belt. Cutty has led a number of youth missions teams over the years and has ministered all over the world. During his session, Cutty shared with students how he plans his trips, trains his teams, and leads them in effective ministry overseas.
In the evening session, Mayra Munoz encouraged students to always remember what Christ did for them on the cross as well as in and through their lives and ministries. The following day, she dared students to dream about how God can use them and to seize the dream God has placed in their hearts.
In the afternoon session, Max Barroso acknowledged that while God first spoke to him at a young age, it was several years before the Lord released him to be a missionary. He shared that we each go through a process of preparation during which God equips us for the ministry to which we are called and we should not grow discouraged in waiting. Instead, Max encouraged students to recognize the process as a time of personal and spiritual growth and challenged them not to lose sight of the promise God made to them.
The following day, Matt Bennett shared an overview of the various IPHC ministries and how World Missions operates around the world. Afterward, he welcomed guest speaker, Clay Hearn. Clay is a SOWer who spent a number of months in Sudan, Africa where he helped with the medical clinic established by the Hope4Sudan project. Clay fascinated students with his stories of God’s miraculous protection and healing power.
Afterward, Max and Jessica Barroso led a second session during which they shared about The Awakening and how their ministry can serve college students as they pursue their call to missions. When asked who in the room God was calling to missions, 20 students responded that God had promised them they would serve in missions ministry somewhere around the world!! We were absolutely thrilled to learn of so many future missionaries and cannot wait to see how God is going to use them across the globe!!
